Public Viewing is an ongoing portrait project on Polaroid material and a public street art installation which was put up in Berlin in September 2008. A person sits in a dark room in front of the camera for a while, not knowing when it will flash. I am interested in how the people react in such a situation: not being able to see anything, but aware of being watched. Only one shot per person.
For the public Installation i chose 3 Portraits and printed 3x4 meter trucktarps. The oversized polaroids where mounted on empty housewalls along busy streets. For two months these 6 saucer eyes had an eye on the street life of the city of berlin. They gazed, stared and spied at everyone and everything passing by. Or they simply ignored it. They were a methode of communication with the inhabitants and observers. Watch and be watched.
